The 15 Coolest Weapons Born From Sci-Fi Cinema
November 17 2009 | film | design | replica | pop
While spending most of the past weekend sick in bed, I took in my daily dose of fluids, vitamins and viewings of various DVDs I have here at the house. My usual comedic selections weren't doing it for me and instead I began to dabble in the science fiction films I have on the shelves. As one sci-fi viewing rolled into the next, I tossed the notion around in my head and thought to stack up some of the "coolest" weapons that sci-fi films have produced over the years. By no means a definitive list of lists, but it helped pass the time in bed.
15. Deckard's Blaster
| Film | Blade Runner | ![]() |
Closely following the film's neo-noir-esque style, Rick Deckerd's blaster pistol is an icon itself. The gun featured a cross-checkered amber colored grip, with a heavy barrel; a nice homage to the classic detective handgun. |

14. Identity Disk
| Film | Tron | ![]() |
The ultimate in data storage technology. With the ability to store learned info or special codes, the Identity Disk could also be used as a frisbee/boomerang type weapon and a small shield. Not the most impressive sounding weapon, but it did the trick on screen and is sure get a major stylistic upgrade when Tron 2.0 is released next year. |
13. The Arc Gun
| Film | District 9 | ![]() |
A recent addition to the scifi arsenal, the Arc gun fires a powerful charge of electricity. The gun fires and electronic charge which damages all in its path. Essentially lightning in a rifle, the aliens of District 9 hold their own with this piece in their hand. |
| Film | Starship Troopers | ![]() |
The long-range, rapid fire automatic Morita rifle is the preferred weapon of the Mobile Infantry and the Federation Fleet. Featuring a secondary shotgun on the underside, the Mobile Infantry bring the fight first when it comes to an up close arachnid threat. |
11. Combi-Stick Hunting Spear
| Film | Predator 2 | ![]() |
Featured in Predator 2, this copper finished telescopic spear, also known as the Combi-Stick, is one of the many weapons used by the Predator species to hunt his prey, in this case, Danny Glover. The spear allows for brutal, close-quarters action as well as...you know...spearing victims across the room. The 'wow' factor comes from the spears extendible blades which retract on command. |
10. USMC M41A Pulse Rifle
| Film | Aliens | ![]() |
The standard issue the weapon for the USMS, the M41A Pulse Rifle of Aliens fame is an electronic pulse triggered weapon with a digital ammo counter display and 30mm pump action grenade launcher. Able to fire 900 rounds per minute in semi-automatic, fully automatic or four round burst fashion. |
9. The Auto-9
| Film | Robocop | ![]() |
As awful as it may sound, I feel like the unveiling of this gun was a milestone in my childhood. Something about seeing this on screen when I was 9 just blew my mind. Built around a modified Beretta M93R, the deafening 3-fire bursts still sound as cool as they did when I first heard them on the big screen. |
8. Phaser
| Film | Star Trek | ![]() |
First introduced in 1966, this weapon was the commissioned sidearm for all Starfleet Command cadets in the 23rd century. A simple but powerful weapon able to stun, burn, incinerate and cut through solid objects. It's not hard to wonder why the phaser deserves a place among the 14 other cool weapons. |
7. Proton Pack
| Film | Ghostbusters | ![]() |
What's more threatening than having a particle accelerator strapped to your back? Used to weaken ghosts enough to trap them, the proton pack creates charged particle beams which then generates a proton beam. All the science aside, one thing all can understand is that they sure make for good watchin'. |
6. 40-Watt Plasma Rifle
| Film | Terminator 2 | ![]() |
We were introduced to the '40-Watt Plasma Rifle' as the Terminator's primary weapon being used on the field against the human resistance during the later years of the war. Thanks to the awesome sound fx crew for Terminator 2, these guns sounded as menacing as their wielders looked; marching over the charred skulls and firing blue bolts of plasma into the night. |
5. The Good Samaritan
| Film | Hellboy & Hellboy II | ![]() |
Created to put monsters out of their misery, The Good Samaritan hand-cannon is a 4-chamber sidearm used by Hellboy in both his films. What might appear comical when handled by a lesser being, Hellboy breaks the mold and pulls out all stops when charging with this in hand. |
4. Cutting Disc
| Film | Predator 2 | ![]() |
Able to cut through cattle (and Gary Busey) like butta', the expandable cutting disc is by far the most surgical weapon used by the alien hunter in Predator 2. Definitely one of my favorite designs. |
3. "Big Baby"
| Film | Hellboy II | ![]() |
When a demon, summoned to earth to fight the forces of evil that threaten to destroy world, he better be packing a heavy duty piece to impress me. The 'Big Baby', a six shooter shotgun almost 30" in length is the weapon of choice for taking care of the biggest baddies Hellboy may face. Ok, I'm impresed. |
2. The Zorg ZF-1
| Film | The Fifth Element | ![]() |
Built for the ambidextrous assassin in need of a net launching, flame-throwing, ice freezing, 300 rounds per second (with 'Replay' button for all the remaining bullets to follow the same path) sidearm. Complete with self-destruct button. Thank you, Gary Oldman. |
1. Lightsaber (duh...)
| Film | Star Wars | ![]() |
What's cooler than cruising through the galaxy with with a crystal-powerd laser sword on your belt, ready to spring into life at the flip of a switch? Go on, tell me... It can't be beat. |
